History & Personality: The one period of Vincent’s life that has shaped him into who he is the very most, the time of his life that is basically the core of his being, is his childhood. He and his brother, Gilbert, were cast onto the streets by their parents because of Vincent’s possession of one red eye, something that is generally always seen as a symbol of misfortune and evil (and gave him the title Child of Misfortune, something that still follows him and he still believes in), and for a long time they only had each other. But even Gilbert sometimes felt that he didn’t want his brother because after all how they were treated and why they were there in the first place only had to do because of the red eye, and Gilbert did sometimes try to leave Vincent behind. Though he never actually did. They were later adopted and taken care of by Jack Vessalius, but that didn’t repair anything because that red eye kept giving them trouble.

Due to this part of Vincent’s life, he grew very attached to and obsessed with his brother. Everything he does is, essentially, with Gilbert in mind, to make sure he’s happy. A lot of Vincent’s feelings about Gilbert contradict each other, really, because even if Vincent wants to keep Gilbert close there is only one ultimate goal in his mind, to assure Gilbert’s happiness; erase himself, because it was his fault that Gilbert got thrown into the streets. To him, anything bad that happens to Gilbert is his fault because his eye brings misfortune. Thus, logically, Gilbert would be happy as long as he didn’t exist, right?

To do this, he wants to obtain the Will of the Abyss, someone who is capable of changing the past (although that doesn’t mean the outcome will actually be what you really wanted). In the world of Pandora Hearts, there is another dimension called the Abyss, which is a kind of messed up toy box that is known as hell, a bit of a prison, although some believe it to be a paradise (without having actually seen it, but who knows, there might be something to it). The Will of the Abyss, obviously perhaps, controls this dimension, but also obviously more than that since she can affect the human world. The amount of power she actually has is still fairly unknown.

Vincent pretty much only cares about his brother and any other human being is a chessman to be used to complete whatever goal is needed for the sake of his brother. There’s a hatred for humanity (even if he feels he doesn’t deserve to be treated well for having hurt his brother) and love for Gilbert rooted deep into Vincent’s soul and this will not change easily. Even if Gilbert had tried to leave several times, Vincent needed him, and still does, and very much loves him even so, as much as the thought that Gilbert must always stay is just as present as those feelings. This has, if anything, caused Vincent to only cling harder to him because he’s sure Gilbert wants to leave and he understands that, and he would let him if he did. Even if he doesn’t want him to.

However, there are two people aside from Gilbert that Vincent can admit to caring about. He cared about Jack, because Jack saved them, or more importantly, saved Gilbert from the streets and gave them a somewhat better life, everything considering. Anyone who does something good for Gilbert is someone Vincent has an easy time coming to like, or love (but Gilbert is above everyone).

Then there is Elliot.

When Vincent found out that Gilbert was chosen to be Glen Baskerville’s next body, it led to him likely starting (it’s still unsure just who exactly started it, but it’s pretty much confirmed at this time that it was a lot due to Vincent) what is in the manga’s current time known as the Tragedy of Sablier. Basically, while the Baskervilles were slaughtering people on Glen’s orders (who knows why; Glen was a bit insane), Vincent got manipulated into opening the gate to the Abyss, told it would save Gilbert, and sending pretty much the whole city into the Abyss.

Vincent and Gilbert both came out of the Abyss 90 years later, without having aged at all. The Abyss messes with time and you never come out at the same time you were sent in, if you come out at all. And while Gilbert was taken in by the Vessalius family (Jack’s successors), Vincent was taken in by the Nightrays, where he met Elliot. For years, he searched for Gilbert and only after Gilbert’s master and best friend, Oz, had been sent into the Abyss did he finally find him.

This was a tough time for Gilbert, who did everything he could to figure out a way to save Oz, and he was generally very depressed. However, even through all that, Elliot managed to make Gilbert smile, and Vincent is forever thankful for it.

Going back a little, the Tragedy of Sablier affected Vincent a great deal since, essentially, he feels like he brought everyone to their demise. Even while he may not fully care about most people, it still very much strengthens his belief that anywhere he goes brings misfortune. It doesn’t help that opening the gate left him unconscious and when he came to, he saw the massacre that the Baskervilles in reality left behind but to him it seemed like it was his doing.

He thus came out of the Abyss a broken child and not knowing where his brother was made this harder for him. Even if he had saved Gilbert, he was sure of that or at least kept telling himself that, he had also ruined something and didn’t know if Gilbert was alright. As soon as he had found Gilbert and assured himself of that, he could focus on the most important thing: making Gilbert happy.

And he came to the conclusion that the only way to do this - since even when he tried to do things right it just went wrong - was to make sure he never existed. If he never existed, Gilbert wouldn’t have anything to bring him misfortune, right?

Getting adopted by the Nightrays was a new experience for Vincent. He did work for them - in other words assassinated people - so the Nightrays basically formed him into the cold-blooded killer that he is today.

And they were, after all, one of the four Duke Houses that were made after the Tragedy and Vincent had never been a part of a truly noble family. Jack hadn’t been a poor man but his family was not noble until after the Tragedy. Vincent did, however, settle into the role quite quickly although in no way did he particularly enjoy it. In fact, all of it further spurred on his hatred towards humans.

The Nightray family did not really accept him; they did not adopt him out of kindness (who really knows why) and essentially it was the father’s decision as the Duke. The four blood children (Elliot not counted) didn’t approve of this decision and basically abused Vincent because he wasn’t really a part of the family in their eyes. Vincent didn’t particularly care about this, but it definitely didn’t give him a better view of humanity, and the more he saw of nobility the more he decided that humans were scum and only Gilbert was good.

Especially women came to be a target for his dislike. All he sees of them is shallowness, believing that all that come out of their mouths is gossip and that they’re acting like they deserve the status they have been given. To him, they are simple people only hoping to rise higher in ranks by approaching a member of the four Duke Houses. He despises them, but is more than happy to go along with their act, to charm them so he can manipulate them. After all, if they’re a waste of space anyway, he might as well just use them.

He despises people that use others for their own benefit, but he justifies his own manipulating by the fact that it is all for Gilbert. That belief is something that dominates Vincent’s very being, and he will use anything he has to make Gilbert happy. That includes the Nightray family. Basically, Vincent seems to place everyone on his own level (doubtfully below himself, since he believes himself to be so horrible) and Gilbert above all else.

For his ultimate goal, he goes as far as to lie to and hurt even Gilbert, since to him there is no other outcome than him eventually erasing himself. And once that happens, nothing that he has done will matter anymore.

He will do anything, manipulate anyone. Whatever it takes.

He’s damn good at it too; at manipulating people, thinking ahead, using both “friends” and enemies as if playing a game of chess. He is, in fact, very good at chess too! Thus, he’s a very logical person when it comes to strategy. He does see people as pieces on a chessboard, just for him to use.

To effectively do this, he obviously needs to put up an act. You could see his appearance and the way he acts as a way to show himself as more vulnerable than he really is, to seem harmless. His smiles, his gentle speech and his body language are all means to get on everyone’s good side so he can use them. He tends to do a lot of things in an exaggerated manner to come off as ridiculous even while charming.

No one gets to really see who he actually is, not even Gilbert.

In fact, the person who has probably seen it the most obviously, seen him at his worst, is Oz, who saw flashbacks of the Tragedy of Sablier while in a dimension created by the Will. Behind this mask, Vincent hides how unstable he really is; traumatised and pushed beyond his limit, the Tragedy left him… well, insane. He is most definitely not at a stable piece of mind, even if quite better off than he was at that very moment; covered in blood and running around laughing like a madman.

In a way, he’s still a little caught up in that age. Jack cut his hair after adopting them, saying he should show his eyes because he loved them, and since then he has had a specific fondness for scissors. So much that he used them in order to do something he thought would protect the home that they had built, with Jack. The fact that this home was ruined further feeds his need to cut things up, and his room constantly needs to be cleaned up from torn stuffed animals and pillows. Even if it was something ruined for him when everything was lost, he still does it.

Especially when under stress; when he had gotten reminded of the Tragedy during a coming of age ceremony that went to hell (at which moment Oz’s sister and Vincent’s girlfriend, Ada, ended up seeing him crack a little), he outright told someone he needed to cut something. In other words; that someone, to get information.

Speaking of Ada, she’s someone he got together with for the sake of getting his hands on one of the keys to the gate of the Abyss that her house, Vessalius, holds. And while she irritates him (and frightens him a little bit), she has begun turning into someone he cares for. He can’t for the life of him begin to understand why, but the fact is that she is someone important to Gilbert and someone who has made Gilbert happy. He has a tougher time liking a woman, however, though the way that she’s probably the first one aside from Vanessa Nightray that he has gotten to really know, she probably breaks his general view of women on some level, or levels. She is different, and that likely makes it easier for him to like her.

Really, in a lot of ways Vincent is a walking contradiction.

He hates people that take advantage of others and manipulate, and yet he does it himself. He doesn’t think it’s the same, since to him, they do it for themselves, while he does it for Gilbert. He has never claimed to be a good person, but in a way working towards his goal he thinks is the only thing he’s doing right.

He wants to keep Gilbert away to protect him from misfortune but he also wants to keep Gilbert close. It’s really very simple in one way (and completely complicated in a lot others); Vincent needs him and that is probably the only thing that is bigger in his mind than keeping him safe. This only makes Vincent feel worse about himself, because he thinks it’s so very selfish of him to do such a thing when it can only be bad for Gilbert. But he also needs to keep an eye on Gilbert to protect him (in any way he can even if he doesn’t feel like he… actually can) and to make sure that goal will be completed. Gilbert is, after all, a very important piece in that puzzle, since it’s centred around him. And actually keeping him close both tears Vincent apart and makes him happy.

Somewhere along the line, Vincent has also grown some form of confidence (probably from actually being a part of families). Despite his hatred towards himself and the way he puts himself down, he is absolutely sure that everything he does is right. He is honestly not aware that doing something Gilbert doesn’t make it okay. No matter how awful he considers himself, it’s mainly because of what he has done to Gilbert and not anyone else, that the fact that he carries such misfortune with him and that his very existence hurts Gilbert so.

He really strongly believes that he’s doing the right thing, no matter how many he kills, how many lives he destroys, how many people he hurts. He’s the Child of Misfortune; it doesn’t actually matter then, does it? In a way, it’s almost become an excuse.

Nothing will matter once he actually erases himself anyway. He’s confident he will, and that thought controls everything he does.

Mode of Entrance: Portal
Suitability: While Vincent will most definitely not like it if he ever finds out about what kind of magic the world is focused around, that will hardly get much in the way. He’s the kind of character that will use any means to get his way, and he will happily use anything that the game has to offer. With his character, it’s easy to really play with the game’s setting in many ways.

Vincent is also in general a very stubborn and strong (even if at the same time weak) character who does not easily crumble in the first place. He may have moments when he… well, loses his mind, but they’re normally quick to pass and does not get in the way of anything. He has been to hell and back and it takes a lot to really break him. As long as things don’t remind him of that very trip to “hell”, he can handle things fine. At least enough to function.

FOR OUs ONLY
Items: Just the fancy clothing he wears at Oz’s coming of age ceremony, whatever the seal of Dormouse is on and a pair of scissors. Oh, and the hair tie in his hair.

Also a simple revolver, fully loaded if that's alright. He's very unlikely to use it anyway.
Abilities/Powers: In the Abyss exist creatures called Chains, with different abilities and strength. When not battling other Chains in their own dimension, they’re most often after eating humans. To do this they, of course, need to get to the human world, and to do so they need to contract a human so that they can tie themselves to that world. There are, however, also Chains with more special purposes.

Contracting a Chain is illegal, though an organisation known as Pandora has their agents contract them legally. When illegal, the contractor drinks a Chain’s blood and places a seal upon themselves (the left side of their chest) to count the time they have left (contracting ends with either death or getting pulled into the Abyss together with the Chain once the time runs out). When legal, the contractor dips an item in a Chain’s blood so that the seal is placed upon that item instead.

Vincent possesses two Chains. One he contracted illegally, and one he contracted legally through Pandora. The one everyone knows of and the only one we knew of until recently is the legal one; Dormouse. This is, from what we’ve seen, not an offensive Chain, but it is useful in the way that it has the ability to put people to sleep for however long Vincent wishes. However, his control over Dormouse isn’t so strong and thus, he ends up falling asleep randomly because of it. While he claims it’s because he still hasn’t gotten used to the Chain, it’s probably because of the fact that he’s contracted to another one, which he probably needs to keep more closely in check.

Because this Chain is offensive, and quite powerful. Its name is Demios, Executioner, and all we know of it so far is that it cuts off heads (judging by its name, probably really heads specifically too) before the victim can actually see anything. It’s the real identity of an infamous murderer that goes by the name of Headhunter, Headhunting Queen or Queen of Hearts (and maybe one or two more that I forgot).

Suggested Power Reductions: For Dormouse, he can use it as he’d like because he rarely really does anyway, and it’ll just tire him out a bit to use it.

Demios is… a bit trickier and I’m honestly drawing a blank, so I figured I’d leave that to you mods?

WRITING SAMPLES
First Person: [Phone call | All]

Excuse me. Is this how it works? I’m afraid I’m completely unfamiliar with these kinds of… devices.

[A sheepish chuckle, some rustling as he pauses.]

My name is Vincent Nightray and I would like some assistance in finding someone, if he is here. If not… I need to get back somehow. He’s my brother, Gilbert, and he has golden eyes, black hair and dresses in nearly all black.

[Another pause. ]

Ah, he has a hat that he’s very fond of as well. And… Ah! He’s deathly afraid of cats!

[There’s a fond chuckle, but his tone sobers quickly afterwards.]

If you have seen him or know him do please tell me. Thank you.

Third Person: It kind of took a while to sink in, but eventually, Vincent realised one thing:

He was alone.

He knew he wasn’t technically alone, of course. There were plenty of others here, and they shared a building and all… But he was alone from his world, and more importantly, away from Gilbert. And by now, he was so tired of smiling and talking and thinking that some part of him wanted nothing more than to find Gilbert and curl up next to him.

But, of course, he knew that shouldn’t happen. And it wouldn’t happen even if Gilbert was actually here, because no one was allowed to see him like this, not Gilbert either; so tired and spent as he sank down on his new bed and just stared ahead, a wry smile stuck on his lips. Seeing all of that again, all the bodies and the blood and the-- No. He didn’t want to think about it.

And then coming here all of a sudden, only to realise there was no one here. And he had to smile and act to all of those strangers after that, shaken up and with no way to fix it right then, to de-stress… He hated it.

It shouldn’t be such a bad thing, to be away from Gilbert; then at least Gilbert wasn’t near to be hurt any further… But he needed to do things, he needed to be in his own world so he could make Gilbert happy, even if that meant being around him with this misfortune for a little while longer. Only for a little while longer, after all; he would make sure of that. But if he was stuck here, then… Then that was impossible.

Then he couldn’t do a single thing.

And he hated not being able to do anything.

Pulling his knees up to his chest, he scooted over to the pillows in the bed and settled down on his knees. Now, though, now he was finally alone, and it didn’t matter that there were no servants here that could clean up after him. He would just have to do it himself, then, wouldn’t he? At least if it got really bad. No matter now, however, no matter at all.

He just needed to cut something.

So with a light chuckle, he slipped out his scissors from his pocket and grabbed one of the pillows. Of course, there was only one thing that had to be done, and it wasn’t any more complicated than that. He stabbed the blades through the fabric, relished in the sound of it tearing as he dragged them down, in the way the stuffing spilled out, felt something running off him as his shoulders slumped and his lips spread in a wide grin.

He would have preferred flesh, would have preferred someone’s screams and watching blood flow, but this would do.

It wasn’t any more complicated…

He just needed to get back, that was all. It was important, it was for Gilbert. And so, it would happen. It had to, since it was for Gilbert. It had to.

“Don’t worry, big brother,” he muttered, breathily, as he yanked the scissors back to gather up for another stab. “I’ll get back, and then I’ll make you happy. No matter what it takes.”

Tear it to pieces.
